This small tent produces a sterilized microclimate that keeps agricultural produce fresh for a week without the need for energy-intensive refrigeration.
The Wakati is a solar-powered, easy-to-use and portable solution that can help smallholder farmers improve their incomes by extending the shelf life of crops. A ventilator powered by a 3-watt solar panel gradually evaporates 200 ml of water per week, generating a humid environment within the storage tent that keeps crops healthier for longer and prevents mold and fungi from growing.
Each tent is capable of preserving up to 150 kilograms of produce for up to eight days, thereby greatly reducing food waste and giving farmers more time to sell their crops. Moreover, the tarp packaging that the Wakati is delivered in can be stored by users and used to mend ruptures that may form in the tent.
Why you should care
According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, 40 to 50% of all root crops, fruits and vegetables produced in the world each year end up as waste, some of which occurs during the post-harvest period. Along with this wasted food, there is a large amount of associated resource waste in the form of agricultural inputs. The Wakati offers an environmentally friendly and low cost solution to help reduce food waste and increase profits for smallholder farmers.
