Mud Jeans promotes usage over ownership, facilitating the transition to a circular economy in the fashion industry by leasing jeans and recycling or up-cycling materials.

By retaining ownership of the raw materials, Mud Jeans makes the process of recycling a given. After a year of leasing a pair of jeans or a hoodie, customers have the option of keeping it, switching it for a new model, or sending it back for reuse or recycling. Once recovered, Mud Jeans sells the used clothing as vintage items, or recycles the fabrics into new products. The manufacturing process itself is socially responsible, respecting workers’ rights.

We want to make good quality, ethical jeans available to more people

Bert van Son – CEO, Mud Jeans

The company’s ultimate aim is to demonstrate that even the traditional clothing industry can make the transformation to a circular economy.

Why you should care

Jeans are very water-intensive to produce, requiring around 7,000 liters per pair to manufacture. According to Mud Jeans, 135 million kilograms of cotton are thrown out as waste and burned annually in the Netherlands alone. This company’s process creates clothing with far less water and without the use of chemicals that are harmful to the environment and people.

How the Global Goals are addressed

Decent Work and Economic Growth

The partner factories of Mud Jeans are audited by the Fairway Foundation to make sure that living wages are paid, there is gender equality and other fair labor practices are in place

Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

Mud Jeans’ partners undertake research to promote innovation and sustainable business practices like stone washing without bleach and new laser cutting techniques.

Responsible Consumption and Production

The "Lease A Jeans " consumption model moves towards a sustainable fashion future with lower levels of production and consumption.
